In 2001, my good friend Anne Mayea and I decided to breed her Hester (CH Ziba Talitha) to my Barak (CH D’Ansor Scimitar Ben Barak, CC, CM). This combination produced a lovely litter of elegant, sound puppies. Both girls that we kept from the “G” litter have shown exceptional coursing ability.
Blanca won the coveted ASA Christmas Cup in 2001.
Neither showed any interest in performing in the show ring and although both are sound, lovely dogs, showing them has been a struggle due to their reluctance to play that game.
A handsome, sound male, Luca easily finished his show championship.
However, in the fall of 2003 as we were starting the coursing season, we realized Luca had a problem but we were unable to diagnose what the problem was.
It would be several months and many tests before he was diagnosed with Valley Fever.
Valley Fever is indigenous to only a few areas - primarily the California Central Valley and parts of Arizona. The culprit is a spore in the soil. The victim inhales the spores and they invade the body causing fatigue, lethargy and joint pain. He did not exhibit the typical symptoms and initial tests were negative so we did not start treatment until early 2004. He was on medication until spring of 2005.
In the fall of 2005, we restarted his coursing career.
Although he is an old man in comparison to the top coursing dogs, most of whom are only two years old, Luca has proved he can course as he ended the season with 120 points!
Luca has sired two litters, the S litter with Ch D’Ansor’s Masada Al Sayad and the C litter with CH Burydown Vogue D’Al Sayad. CC, CM. The offspring of both litters have excelled in the show ring and in the field!
